During this 2020 lockdown, you were involved in ‘Virtual Collaborators’, tell us about the piece and your choices?
Virtual Collaborators itself was conceived by the brilliant Danusia Samal, who set me up with Chris Edis and Hal Chambers. The piece, ‘Self Disassembly’ follows Michael Brown an accountant who is one step ahead of the company he works for as they prepare to go into administration. Having to deal with the challenges of FIRST setting up an office prior to the actual task of working from home, we ultimately watch the character have a nervous breakdown!
I filmed it entirely on my own which certainly helped with the level of anxiety/stress levels Michael goes through as well as trying to create something truthful. It was also incredibly freeing because of the time limitations meant I couldn’t overthink my performance. It was certainly one of the most challenging pieces I have worked on!
Its clear how passionate you are about theatre. Tell us who is on your Artistic Directors ‘wish list’?
That’s Incredibly hard to answer! I will always have to say Lisa Spirling at Theatre 503. Roy Alexander Weise & Bryony Shanahan at the Royal Exchange, Amit Sharma at the Birmingham REP (It is now my local theatre) and Vicky Featherstone at the Royal Court.
I love characters like ‘Spud’ from Trainspotting and ‘Archie’ from Naked – Really anything that Ewen Bremner has played. I’ve recently been watching Ozark and the character of ‘Ben’ played by Tom Pelphrey is just an exceptional piece of acting and character arc. Michael Fassbender collaborations with Steve McQueen have always inspired, the same goes with Scott Chambers and Joe Stephensons with ‘Chicken’ and ‘Mckellen’. Heath Ledger in Candy… The list goes on and on!
